Frenso State University is breaking new ground as they have elected to start a women's lacrosse program entering the 2009 season.

Sue Behme

When you consider the following two factors, it would seem unimaginable that Fresno State University would ever consider competing in lacrosse.

None of the local high schools currently play lacrosse.

Fresno State does not even have a club team for lacrosse.

Yet, the newly-formed women's team will start Division 1 lacrosse competition in eight months.

This past summer, Fresno State hired Sue Behme to take control of the newly formed women's program.

Behme had spent the last nine seasons at Nazareth College in Rochester, New York. Before her tenure at Nazareth, she built a lacrosse program at SUNY Geneseo which will be helpful as she attempts to pioneer the sport in the central valley.

This will be by far the biggest challenge of Behme's career as she had about two months to find 23 student-athletes to teach the game to.
