Inaugural Shooters Academy Athlete Spotlight
Josh Clark

DeBartolo Lacrosse enjoyed the opportunity to work with every athlete in attendance this past weekend at the inaugural DeBartolo Lacrosse Shooters Academy. Through review with Andrew DeCicco and staff, we have spotlighted a select group of athletes that highlighted the event with their performance and work ethic.

DeBartoloLacrosse.com will provide profiles and updates of each athlete in attendance this past weekend throughout the fall.

In this article, we take the time to offer a glimpse of the talent that was on hand with a scouting report from Andrew DeCicco and his staff…

Michael Curran – North Brunswick HS (Jr.)
The leading (regular season) goal scorer in the state of New Jersey as a sophomore last season, Curran proved to be one of the best athletes and best shooters in attendance. “He is very athletic and coachable,” said DeCicco. “He’s a hard worker. He has a very good right handed shot and a smooth release.”

Brett Axelson – Cazenovia (NY) HS (Jr.)
Axelson, joined by his father, Rob, made the trek from New York and performed very well. After scoring 29 goals in only eight games of varsity as a sophomore last spring, Axelson not only showcased great ability but the willingness to put in the extra work as he made his way back out to the field during lunch to get in an extra 30 minutes of shooting.

”Brett was athletic, and an accurate shooter,” said DeCicco. “He has a smooth shot and a natural motion with his shot.”

Evan Baskt – Morristown-Beard HS (Jr.)
”Evan already possessed a great right-handed shot, but improved immensely with it over the weekend,” commented DeCicco. “He has great speed with his shot and running. He is quick. He has a hard, accurate shot, but needs to continue to improve on his left-handed shot.”

Jonathon Brucia – Seton Hall Prep (Jr.)
Brucia possesses great size standing at six-foot-three and showed potential for a great future in lacrosse if he continues to work at it. “Jon has a great attitude, which I think, gives him a great future,” said DeCicco. “He learns quickly and can play at a high level. He needs to work on his left-handed shot, though.”

Kyle Houston – Montville HS (Jr.)
Kyle Houston is a fluid athlete that showcased natural ability with the stick and a commitment to continue to improve. “He has a nice release,” said DeCicco. “He is extremely accurate, and has a good handle around the goal.”

Alex Amedeo – Seton Hall Prep (Jr.)
”Alex needs to play with more confidence, but he has great speed,” stated DeCicco. “His right handed shot improved tremendously over the weekend.” Amedeo will be expected to assume more responsibility as a junior for Seton Hall Prep next spring.

Kris Molinaro – Fairfield (CT) Prep (Soph)
A member of the Connecticut Gators club team, Molinaro joined his younger brother, Danny (8), this past weekend. “(Kris) is a great athlete,” said DeCicco. “The best part is he has a great attitude and is a hard worker. He is willing to learn and improve. He already possesses a quick release.”

Ethan Bliss – Seton Hall Prep (Fr.)
Bliss will be a new member of the Seton Hall Prep program next season as he enters his freshman season. “He really improved on his release,” stated DeCicco. “By the end of the weekend, you could say he has a smooth release. He’ll have to continue to work harder on his right handed shot, but he has good accuracy with his shot and the right type of attitude to continue to improve.”

Other notables……..
Alec Dvoretsky was a rock in the net. His play as a goalie seemed to improve as the shooters improved as he proved to be a solid, consistent stopper. Goalie Brandyn Merkle will be a freshman entering the Mount Olive program, and was a great listener in really adapting his style of play through the coaches instruction .Youth athletes Kyle O’Keefe (13-years-old) and Bradley Paterson (11-years-old) had great maturity for their age, and showed the hunger to learn. Both performed well against the elder goalies.
